I think part of what's needed in an EBook interface is a way of making instant-but-temporary bookmarks and an easy/instant way of jumping between them. (Or maybe you spin off small separate tiled windows? Start by putting a single paragraph (Paragraph Addressable) inside, make it easy to broaden to include n paragraphs in each direction...) (more)

Stowe Boyd considers the positioning of Multiply (demographic-targeted Social Networking), wondering whether verticals are appropriate in this field. People’s social networks are not neatly parceled into demographic slices. A 30-something dad with kids may spend a bunch of his time palling around with other 30-somethings, but also with people through work, and family members of all ages. Ditto his wife. Ditto his 50-something dad. I agree, unless you're specializing based on deep features that are specific to some group/purpose, more services is the wrong direction. (On the other hand, if we had an Open Social Networking Model EcoSystem, then maybe you'd have vertical networks from which a user could easily cross to other networks, etc.) (more)

Ash Maurya gives some nicely specific direction on Customer Development Interviewing (Problem Interview). There are 3 primary things I want to learn/test in this interview: 1. Who is the prototypical early adopter? (Customer Segment) 2. How badly they want this problem solved? (Problem) 3. How do they solve it today? (Existing Alternatives)

A gesture is a form of Non-Verbal communication or non-vocal communication in which visible bodily actions communicate particular messages, either in place of, or in conjunction with, speech. Gestures include movement of the hands, face, or other parts of the body. Gestures differ from physical non-verbal communication that does not communicate specific messages, such as purely expressive displays, proxemics, or displays of joint attention. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gesture (more)

A touch user interface (TUI) is a computer-pointing technology based upon the sense of touch (Haptic-s). Whereas a graphical user interface (GUI) relies upon the sense of sight, the TUI enables not only the sense of touch to innervate and activate computer-based functions, it also allows the user, particularly those with visual impairments, an added level of interaction based upon tactile or Braille input. Based around a WebCam-style add-on peripheral, it enables users to control and interact with their console/computer without the need for a game controller, through a Natural User Interface using Gesture-s and spoken commands (Speech Recognition).[9] The first-generation Kinect was first introduced in November 2010 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinect

In computing, multi-touch refers to the ability of a a surface (a Track Pad or TouchScreen) to recognize the presence of two or more points of contact with the surface. This plural-point awareness is often used to implement advanced functionality such as pinch to zoom or activating certain subroutines attached to predefined Gesture-s. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-touch

Karl Schroeder suggests: What would a correct theory of human nature look like, combined with the principles of Self Organization and Collective Intelligence that are emerging right now? What would a Cog Sci (NeuroScience) singularity look like? I think it would look like GoodManners. (LeeWay) (see Unifying Culture/Cultural Pluralism at New Look At Schools) What if, instead, we started a new movement in manners, one directed at conflict resolution, collective problem solving, and the cohabitation of diverse kinds of people? And simply presented it as a Movement, like open source software, not run by a social engineering elite but by anybody who's willing to use the publically available code: i.e., the peer-reviewed, experimentally verified, incomplete but emerging cognitive sciences?... Rewilded manners are manners that have had localization, historical accident, and obsolete folk theories removed; washing hands is rewilded manners. Eating pork is no longer bad manners (unless you eat it around people for whom it still is). Rewilded manners is saying, "I'm sorry, could you repeat that?" instead of demanding that the person you're talking to speak proper English... Imagine the rewilded manners of a near-future Earth, where overlapping etiquette movements combine and compete the way that Gnome and KDE do within the broader Linux community, each seeking a style proper to its vision of human culture, but each adhering to deeper common principles that are derived from a rigorous study of how people actually behave, and what helps them get along, when they do get along. (Re-Wilding) (Minimal Compact)

Alexis Madrigal has identified 76,897 Micro Genre-s defined by NetFlix. Classic Tag Intersection explosion. Using large teams of people specially trained to watch movies, Netflix deconstructed Hollywood. They paid people to watch films and tag them with all kinds of metadata. This process is so sophisticated and precise that taggers receive a 36-page training document that teaches them how to rate movies on their sexually suggestive content, goriness, romance levels, and even narrative elements like plot conclusiveness... Todd Yellin said that the genres were limited by three main factors: 1) they only want to display 50 characters for various UI reasons, which eliminates most long genres; 2) there had to be a "critical mass" of content that fit the description of the genre, at least in Netflix's extended DVD catalog; and 3) they only wanted genres that made syntactic sense... As a thought experiment: Imagine if FaceBook broke down individual websites according to a 36-page tagging document that let the company truly understand what it was people liked about Atlantic or Popular Science or 4chan or Viral Nova? (Could Del.icio.us do something interesting with their messily-created Tagsonomy?) (How about if LinkedIn did it for people? Go beyond "skills"?) No one — not even Yellin — is quite sure why there are so many altgenres that feature Raymond Burr and Barbara Hale. It's inexplicable with human logic. It's just something that happened. (more)
