Interview with Aaron Baum about his work with Algae. Baum is a research consultant for NASA's OMEGA project, whose mission is to create massive amounts of algae for biofuel, fertilizer and food. The San Rafael, California algae-phile knows not everyone has access to professional grade equipment – which can cost tens of thousands of dollars – so Baum has started teaching seminars on how to raise spirulina inexpensively and in one's own home. The day-long workshops cost $150 and he'll also provide you with a kit that includes a tank, spirulina starter stock, a nutrient mix and other equipment for $200. Through these workshops, Baum hopes to continue forming a collaborative community that shares knowledge about algae farming.

Just yesterday San Francisco saw the unveiling of the world's first Algae fuel-powered (BioFuel) vehicle, dubbed the Algaeus. The plug-in hybrid car (AutoMobile), which is a Prius tricked out with a nickel metal hydride battery and a plug, runs on green crude from Sapphire Energy - no modifications to the gasoline engine necessary. The set-up is so effective, according to FUEL producer Rebecca Harrell, that the Algaeus can run on approximately 25 gallons from coast to coast! (more)

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on Thursday released its long-awaited revised rules regarding devices that access Analog Tv White Spaces, which can provide extended wireless capabilities, sometimes known as "WiFi on steroids.".. Under the new rules, any white spaces device must include geo-location, which will allow it to cross reference its location with a database of licensed spectrum users in the area to make sure the white spaces device does not interfere. The FCC ditched a requirement that white spaces devices also include sensing, a technology that scans spectrum for unused channels. (more)

Bob Woodward has a new book out, ObamasWars about Afghanistan and Barack Obama's struggles against his own advisors to shorten the mess. Obama is shown at odds with his uniformed military commanders, particularly Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Gen. David Petraeus, head of U.S. Central Command during the 2009 strategy review and now the top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan. Woodward reveals their conflicts through detailed accounts of two dozen closed-door secret strategy sessions and nearly 40 private conversations between Obama and Cabinet officers, key aides and intelligence officials. A month before California voters decide the fate of a ballot initiative that would legalize Marijuana, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed a bill that essentially puts those caught possessing small amounts of the drug on the same level as those caught speeding on the freeway... The governor — who has come out against the ballot measure, Proposition 19 (so is he trying to pitch that the Proposition is unncessary?) — cast the new law’s effect as largely administrative, changing the crime of possession from a misdemeanor to an infraction, the lowest level of offense under state law... About a dozen states have softened their stance on marijuana over the years, including Massachusetts, where voters passed a ballot initiative in 2008 that made possession of less than one ounce a civil offense punishable by a $100 fine. (Minors also have to take a drug awareness class.)

Profile of Nick Denton, founder of Gawker Media. Where other media barons see their job as a calling—a chance to do important, perhaps even socially redeeming, JournalIsm—Denton unapologetically worships at the temple of the page view. His ability to ignore his own preferences is, in fact, a key secret of his success. “I don’t think he’s even interested in a lot of stuff [his blogs] write about,” chuckles Gapper. “He always says that the problem with journalists is that they write about things that interest journalists, not the rest of the world.”

Thomas Friedman says in talks here and elsewhere I continue to be astounded by the level of disgust with Washington DC, and our Two Party System — so much so that I am ready to hazard a prediction: Barring a transformation of the Democratic and Republican Parties, there is going to be a serious Third Party candidate in 2012, with a serious political movement behind him or her — one definitely big enough to impact the election’s outcome. There is a revolution brewing in the country, and it is not just on the right wing but in the radical center. I know of at least two serious groups, one on the East Coast and one on the West Coast, developing “third parties” to challenge our stagnating two-party duopoly that has been presiding over our nation’s steady incremental decline. Profile of Jon Stewart. And he clings to the naïve hope that the legitimate news media (Journalism) will get its act together and become a resolute force for truth and good government. “You have to imagine someone is going to come along in a nonpartisan fashion and create a similarly tenacious organization as Fox,” Stewart says. “There’s got to be a way to translate people’s ability to be titillated into a way to inform them that’s not necessarily PBS. There’d be money in that.”... "I know the difference between real social change and what we do. You know what we are? Soil enrichers. Maybe we can add a little fertilizer to the soil so that real people can come along and grow things.”
