Before you take Web Design too seriously, it's worth noting that there are some sites out there that are both successful and ugly. Changes may not matter. (more)

Google Editions finally launched with the name Google Ebookstore. I'm just calling it Google Books. (more)

Venkatesh Rao thinks that Business Book-s should be written as a Thick Strategy Narrative as a way to merge the messy details with some theoretical structure. (See recent 2010-10-11-RaoGoodVsGreatAndOpportunism and 2010-05-15-RaoKiechelLordsOfStrategy.) In business and politics, much of the attention is on marketing and motivational narratives. In the broader cultural sphere, there’s a lot of interest in identity narratives. There is also an anti-narrative movement focused on the problems of narrative approaches.... My own interest is pretty narrowly focused on decision-narratives. The raw stream-of-consciousness story you tell yourself as you actually live through an experience and make your live, real-time decisions. (more)

The Archos70 doesn't come with Android's Market (AppStore). (more)

I read these periodically (see Book List), but am increasingly dissatisfied. They are implicitly meant to be predictive: "if you do this, you'll get similar results", but I think that tends to be BullShit, even when written by a supposed Business Guru.

The name for Google Book Search as it starts more actively selling books. (more)

Google book service. Started as Google Print and Google Book Search to search books to read scanned pages online, then became Google Editions or Google Ebookstore to sell EBook versions of those books.

A few different times the Time Capsule has started flaking out: the light in the front starts flashing orange, and even though Macs seem to be connecting to it, they can't get outside connections. I suspect this may happen when there's a guest using a PC laptop, but am not positive. (more)

Silk Road is an anonymous Market. It uses BitCoin for Currency and TOR for anonymity. Currently it's being used mainly for drugs. Gee drugs and money, the US government won't be bothered by that at all. The goods-seller is pretty safe, but the buyer has to give a physical address to take delivery, so he's totally at risk of a sting. Its terms of service ban the sale of “anything who’s purpose is to harm or defraud, such as stolen credit cards, assassinations, and weapons of mass destruction.”... Silk Road cuts down on scams with a reputation-based trading system familiar to anyone who’s used Amazon or EBay (Reputation Management)... Silk Road’s administrator cites the anarcho-libertarian philosophy of Agorism. “The state is the primary source of violence, oppression, theft and all forms of coercion,” Silk Road wrote to us. “Stop funding the state with your tax dollars and direct your productive energies into the black market.”

Dave Winer says the World Wide Web is only half the answer when it comes to hyperlinking. It says how to hyperlink reading, but offers nothing in re hyperlinked writing. (HyperText) I Commented about Automatic Linking via WikiWord-s and Purple Numbers via Purple Slurple.

Way back on May31 Anil Dash pondered the idea of Apple Computer making a Twitter-competitor/clone. The hardest, most expensive technical part of building a web-scale Twitter competitor already exists in Apple's infrastructure. What's missing, in an odd reversal of Apple's usual pattern, is a well-designed, simple user experience that makes people want to participate. Could a small team of developers and designers within Apple make a credible realtime messaging service with first-rate native clients on every important platform? (more)

My MacBook is 3.5yrs old. It serves me pretty well, except (a) Web Browser crashes or slowdowns probably associated with having too many windows/tabs open for my 4GB of RAM; (b) the 120GB Hard Drive is almost full, largely due to MP3 files. Plus The Boys often both need computers for homework, and they end up fighting over The Wife's IMac because both my 6yo IBook Lap Top and the little EeePc NetBook are too creaky to happily work with 50pg papers or GoogleDocs.
