Alex Steffen thinks it's much more important that we move to compact communities (Urbanization) than improve AutoMobile Gas Mileage to reduce Climate Change. In other words, we know that density reduces driving. We know that we're capable of building really dense new neighborhoods and even of using good design, In-Fill development and infrastructure investments to transform existing medium-low density neighborhoods into walkable (Walking) compact communities. Creating communities dense enough to save those 85 million metric tons of tailpipe emissions is (politics aside) easy. It is within our power to go much farther: to build whole metropolitan regions where the vast majority of residents live in communities that eliminate the need for daily driving, and make it possible for many people to live without private cars altogether... People in compact urban areas also pay substantially less in other energy costs. As we've discussed frequently before, dense neighborhoods are far more energy efficient than even "green" sprawl already and all the innovation trends seem to me to benefit compact development... Density is not just green, it's blue. Studies show that urban dwellers tend not only to use less water overall, but generate less Storm Water Run Off per person... Compact communities are better able to support the kinds of distributed infrastructure that lends itself to neighborhood survivability and disaster Resilience.

iChat (or IChatAv) was an Instant Messaging software application developed by Apple Inc. for use on its MacOs X operating system. It supported instant text messaging over XMPP/Jingle or OSCAR (AIM) protocol; it also featured audio, video and Screen Sharing capabilities. It also allowed for local network discussion with users discovered through BonJour protocols. As of February 16, 2012, iChat has been discontinued, and has been replaced in OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion" by Messages (see IMessage). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IChat

Trading in the money markets is done over the counter and is wholesale. Various instruments exist, such as Treasury bills, Commercial Paper (Corporate Debt), bankers' acceptances, deposits, certificates of deposit (CD), bills of exchange, repurchase agreements, federal funds, and short-lived mortgage-, and asset-backed securities http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Money_market (more)

Roderick T Long on the cheap HealthCare provided by Mutual Aid associations before they were outlawed by Big Government and Trade Guild-s like the AMA. "Lodge practice" refers to an arrangement, reminiscent of today's HMO-s, whereby a particular society or lodge would contract with a doctor to provide medical care to its members... Most remarkable was the low cost at which these medical services were provided. At the turn of the century, the average cost of "lodge practice" to an individual member was between one and two dollars a year. A day's wage would pay for a year's worth of medical care. By contrast, the average cost of medical service on the regular market was between one and two dollars per visit. Yet licensed physicians, particularly those who did not come from "big name" medical schools, competed vigorously for lodge contracts, perhaps because of the security they offered; and this competition continued to keep costs low... Medical societies like the AMA imposed sanctions on doctors who dared to sign lodge practice contracts. This might have been less effective if such medical societies had not had access to government power; but in fact, thanks to governmental grants of privilege, they controlled the medical licensure procedure, thus ensuring that those in their disfavor would be denied the right to practice medicine.

Michael Pollan on the Farm Bill. Like most Processed Food-s, the Twinkie (Obesity) is basically a clever arrangement of carbohydrates and fats teased out of corn, soybeans and wheat - three of the five commodity crops that the farm bill supports, to the tune of some $25 billion a year. (Rice and cotton are the others.).. The current farm bill helps commodity farmers by cutting them a check based on how many bushels they can grow... By making it possible for American farmers to sell their crops abroad for considerably less than it costs to grow them, the farm bill helps determine the price of corn in Mexico and the price of cotton in Nigeria and therefore whether farmers in those places will survive or be forced off the land, to migrate to the cities (Rural Development) - or to the United States (Immigration)... Today the problem is overnutrition, but a School Lunch lady (Educating Kids) trying to prepare healthful fresh food is apt to get dinged by USDA inspectors for failing to serve enough calories; if she dishes up a lunch that includes ChickenNuggets and TaterTots, however, the inspector smiles and the reimbursements flow.
