Steven Johnson revisits David Gelernter's Mirror Worlds. Gelernter's simulated worlds were going to be mirrors. By comparison, the simulations we have now are fantasy islands... Information about how the hospital connects to the wider city—what Gelernter calls topsight—could be had by Zooming out... "My life, like your life, is a series of events in time, with a past, present, and future," Gelernter says... A fascinating new project called Game Neverending (www.gameneverending.com) may further blur the line between real spaces and game spaces... The idea is to create new ways for information to flow from real space into virtual space. "I could have lieutenants in my cult who are allowed to draft new members," says cocreator Stewart Butterfield. "And one level up, there are cult members who can kick people out. Now, managing that group can take a lot of time, but the social interactions that are involved in that management can take place outside the game."... Somewhere in this mix of tools and interactivity, a true mirror world is brewing. Combine the visual interfaces of SimCity, the up-to-the-minute data of My Neighborhood Statistics, the multiple inroads of Game Neverending, and you'd be able to create a true alternate universe, one that was mapped to real events.

Yik Yak is an anonymous (Anonymity) Social Media app. It is available for iOS and Android and it allows people anonymously to create and view "Yaks" within a 10 mile radius (HyperLocal).[1] It differs from other anonymous sharing apps such as Post Secret and Whisper Text in that it is intended for sharing primarily with those in proximity to the user, potentially making it more intimate and relevant for people reading the posts.[2] All users have the ability to contribute to the stream by writing, responding, and "voting up" or "voting down" (liking or disliking) yaks. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yik_Yak (more)

The Emilia Romagna region in Northern Italy is one of the richest in Europe, known for its high-end car manufacturing. While Emilia-Romagna is one of the most economically successful regions in Europe, it is also one of the most cooperative regions in the world. Nearly two of every three of its 4.5 million citizens are members of a cooperative (CoOp). Cooperatives support around 30% of the region’s GDP, making it a stellar example of a large-scale cooperative economy. As with Mondragon Cooperatives Corporation in Spain, the cooperative economy is strongly bolstered by networked relationships which also make cooperatives more resilient in economic crises.

In a Fred Wilson post about KickStarter, the question came up about how to pay back (VC) investors if there's no M And A and no Liquidity Event (IPO). Fred said: secondary transactions and cash payouts are two of the most obvious options. (more)

There's competition between the GRE and GMAT Standardized Test-s. The Educational Testing Service (ETS) administers the G.R.E. and used to do the same for the GMAT before losing the rights two years ago to ACT Inc. and Pearson. Now it is trying to get some of that business back, lobbying business schools to accept the G.R.E. as an alternative to the GMAT: more than 115 have agreed, including at Stanford University, MIT and Johns Hopkins.
