Carl Philipp Gottfried (or Gottlieb) von Clausewitz[1] (/ˈklaʊzəvɪts/; 1 June 1780 – 16 November 1831)[2] was a Prussian general and military theorist who stressed the "moral" (meaning, in modern terms, psychological) and political aspects of war. His most notable work, Vom Kriege (On War), was unfinished at his death. Clausewitz was a realist in many different senses and, while in some respects a romantic, also drew heavily on the rationalist ideas of the European Enlightenment. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_von_Clausewitz

He is principally known for writing Stratechery, a subscription-based newsletter featuring in-depth commentary on tech and media news, which has been called a "must-read in Silicon Valley circles". Thompson's career includes stints at Apple, where he interned at Apple University;[4] Microsoft, where he worked on its Windows Apps team;[5] and at WordPress developer Automattic as a Growth Engineer.[6] Thompson launched Stratechery as a blog while still a Microsoft employee, and in April 2014 devoted himself to the site full-time, operating on a "freemium" subscription model. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Thompson_(writer)

Tyler Cowen cannot, however, agree with one of his (Bjorn Lomborg's) central (Climate Change) claims, namely that the most serious economic research favors only mild remedies or sees the problem as only a moderate one. (more)

Bjorn Lomborg has a new Climate Change book coming out, Smart Solutions For Climate Change. Lomborg denies he has performed a volte face, pointing out that even in his first book he accepted the existence of man-made global warming. "The point I've always been making is it's not the end of the world," he told the Guardian. "That's why we should be measuring up to what everybody else says, which is we should be spending our money well." (more)

Nathan Lewis summarizes/applies William Strauss' and Neil Howe's now-popular book The Fourth Turning (written in 1997) (note same guys are responsible for the Strauss-Howe Generational Theory). In their view, U.S. history (going back to English history) consists of cycles of about eighty years, or four twenty-year seaons... The most recent Spring was the 1945-1964 period. (So we're currently in a Winter starting in 2005 (Credit Crisis 2008), set to last until 2024.) A Crisis emerges as previous issues that might have been ignored or deferred now become dire. The previous order, established in the Spring, crumbles and decays. The private sector no longer provides and adequate refuge from the decay of the civic and community sphere. A new order begins to emerge. (more)
